Dr Theresa U. Nwagha

Senior Lecturer, (Acting HOD Haematology & Immunology)

 

As one of the pioneer residents in the department of Haematology, she was actively involved in undergraduate education ( tutorials for medical students as well as organization of undergraduate examination)in addition to her clinically duties. A feat that led to her being appointed a lecturer II post part 1  fellowship examination and the chief resident of residency training programme. She currently a senior lecturer and hold an honorary consultant position at a department of Haematology UNTH ituku Ozalla

 

She is goal driven, selfless  motivated  a team player and fiercely independent in her thoughts and actions. These features facilitated her vast exposure in different aspects  laboratory practice nationally: quality management systems(ISO15981) blood transfusion; donor management, haemovigilance, karyotyping cytogenetics  and morphological detection of BCR/ABL gene, Basic and advanced laboratory techniques in coagulation, morphology,  ROCHE rising star management training for health executives Biomedical statistics, basic polymerase chain reaction techniques, basic techniques in proteomics, Blood donor management, Human Resource Management,  and Financial regulations.

 

On the international platform, she was the 2012 ASH VTP recipient (where she receive further laboratory exposure in area of molecular diagnostic techniques in haemoglobinopathy and thrombophilia at Cheromio research. S laboratory at Aghia Sophia Children Hospital Athens under the mentorship of Dr Ioannis Papassotiriou),  2017 WFH IHTC fellowship (Under Dr Nigel Keys Of UNC Chapel Hill), 2013 and 2018 ISTH travel grant. She also participated in BAYER international preceptorship on VTE management and WFH treater’s conference on 2016 and 2017.

 

She is also vast in diagnosis and management of malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions with her area of special bias in bleeding, thrombotic disorders .  She is a medical adviser to Haemophilia Foundation of Nigeria , coordinator of Haemophilia treatment center at UNTH  and a member of HFN  medical and scientific advisory committee and one of  clinical administrator of WFH World bleeding disorder registry of which HTC UNTH is one of participating center. She is also the coordinator of coagulation laboratory unit and was responsible  for the department participation in external quality assurance scheme (IEQAS)

 

Tessy holds Master’s degree in public health with malaria prevention and control as areas of special interest and currently in MSc/PHD in human reproductive science programme. She has collaborated with other researchers in writing academic articles in areas of   which are published in reputable peer reviewed medical journals.

 

She loves teaching and have mentored undergraduates postgraduates students and residents She has supervised numerous postgraduate thesis and part 2 dissertation.  She has also served in numerous academic, hospital committee and have held administrative positions .
