At the inception of the Faculty of Medicine in 1967, Paediatrics was a sub-department in the department of Internal Medicine with only two academic members of staff - Dr. Arum Ifekwunigwe and Dr. W. Kaine. It became a full-fledged department in 1973. It has since grown in strength. The department is organized in sub-specially units. Each subspecialty is run by consultants who are academic staff of the University of Nigeria and Honorary consultants to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku Ozalla-Enugu.

Currently, the Department has thirty three academic members of staff. This consists of seven Professors, two associate Professors, fifteen Senior lecturers and ten Lecture I on the academic staff list. Some of the lecturers are pursuing PhD programmes in some areas in Tropical Paediatrics. So far, the Department has produced 14 Professors.
