BRIEF HISTORY

The Faculty of Medicine, University of Nigeria was established in 1967 and the Department of Medicine was one of the foundation Departments. The Department of Medicine at the time included Paediatrics, Radiology, Community Medicine and Psychiatry. The Pioneer Head of Department was Dr. C. Nwokolo (Associate Professor then). The Department had a total of 7 pioneer academic staff. Paediatrics, Radiology, Community Medicine and Psychiatry have since gained autonomy to become independent departments. The department has grown from one of seven foundation lecturers and 21 students in 1967 to its present status of one of the largest in the country with an Academic Staff population of twenty-three (23) and the student population of about 600 at different levels of their training.
