The Sub-Department of Paediatric Surgery was fashioned out of the parent Department of Surgery in 1976. At that period, Paediatric Surgery was an emerging, peculiar and rapidly growing   specialty of Surgery and required specially trained   personnel to teach the undergraduate medical students and train resident doctors. 
                                                                               

Professor Festus A Nwako manned the unit single handedly until 1978 when he was joined by Dr G. Ugbam and Prof. Nene Obianyo.   In 2000 and 2005, Dr. Christopher C Amah and Prof. Sebastian O. Ekenze respectively joined the department as lecturer1. In October 2015, Dr. Uchechukwu O. Ezomike joined as senior lecturer and Rev Sr Dr Elochukwu Perpetua Nwankwo joined in September 2017 as a lecturer 1.
