2. OPENING STATEMENT

Gabriel Mbadiwe Onyeama was born in Nneato in 1954. As a higher school student, he won the John F. Kennedy essay contest for his school, Heerey High School Onitsha in 1975. He is currently a lecturer in psychiatry in the Department of Psychological Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria. He is also a consultant psychiatrist in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla. He has attended many local and international conferences in the field of psychiatry. He has served as Head, Department of Psychological Medicine, UNTH twice. He has also served twice as Ag. Head, Department of Psychological Medicine in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria. He has also served in many faculty, college and UNTH committees. He is currently a faculty board member in the Faculty of Psychiatry, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He has been involved in advocacy for mental health in South East Nigeria for many years now including public lectures and radio talk shows geared toward the fight against stigma of mental illness. In 2001, he organized the first World Mental Health Day in the College/Teaching Hospital during which consultants from the departments of Internal Medicine, Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology presented papers. He has published some of his work in local and international journals.
