Benjamin Uzochukwu qualified as a medical doctor in 1983 and obtained his Diploma in Public Administration in 1996 and Master of Public Health degree in 2000 as well as Certificate in Health Policy Analysis. He is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians and Consultant Community Medicine Physician at the University of Nigeria, Teaching Hospital Enugu. He is also a Professor of Public Health, Health Policy and Systems in the Department of Community Medicine of the University of Nigeria and was the foundation Director, Institute of Public Health, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus from 2015 to 2018 where he teaches Health Policy and systems. He is the assistant coordinator of the Health Policy Research Group of the University. He has been working in various areas of public health for over 20 years and has over 140 publications in international and National Peer-reviewed journals and over 100 paper presentations in national and international conferences. He is a foundation and executive member of the Association of Schools of Public in Africa (ASPHA) and board member, Health System Global. He is the 86th inaugural lecturer of the University of Nigeria Nsukka.
Professor BSC Uzochukwu is a leading member in Health Policy & Systems Research in Africa and Nigeria and has done extensive work focusing on epidemiology of vaccine preventable childhood diseases, Malaria, HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis. He has been involved in the generation of knowledge on social determinants of health, the effect of health sector reform on tropical diseases, how to strengthen African health systemss and key interventions which preferentially benefit the poorest. He has expertise in Health policy and systems analysis and getting research evidence into policy and practice as well as impact evaluation of health programmes.
He has been Principal investigator to several projects and has acted as a policy adviser and consultant to Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health in various areas, ECOWAS and Africa Malaria elimination programmes and ECOWAS forum on good practices in health. He is the chief examiner, faculty of Community Health of the West African Postgraduate Medical College of Physicians. He is an external examiner to various medical schools in Nigeria including: University of Port Harcourt, University of Benin, NnamdiAzikiwe University Awka, and Ebonyi State University Abakiliki and Imo State University, University of Calabar, University of Uyo, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. He is also an external examiner to the Health Economics Unit, University of Cape Town, South Africa, Center for Health Policy, School of Public Health, University of Witwatersrand South Africa, and Ghana’s Postgraduate College of Physicians and Surgeons.
